UV 101: Focus on the Fundamentals of UV for Reuse

What Basic Knowledge of UV Science/Engineering is Critical to Designing/Approving Reuse Water Systems?

Workshop Chair: Phyllis Posy, PosyGlobal, IUVA Education Committee
Workshop Co-Chair: Todd Elliot, Jacobs, IUVA Education Committee

This Workshop will summarize the basics of applying UV to disinfection and chemical contaminant objectives in designing and operating Reuse water systems for different purposes and provide an update recent developments

This Workshop will equip professionals who work in the emerging field of water reuse for direct and indirect potable and non-potable applications with a basic understanding of

  • how UV works,
  • its benefits for different scenarios, where it can be cost-effective;
  • how to choose appropriate configurations in tandem with other technologies,
  • current developments and where to find resources for further information.

The Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand 10 basic rules for determining whether UV is a good fit for a reclaimed water application
  2. Understand regulations and their impact on the use of UV in reuse schemes
  3. Learn the basics of partnering UV with other water technologies for reuse operational efficiency and regulatory compliance
  4. Real world examples that illustrate basic concepts, how regulations impact UV use and pairing with other water technologies
  5. Opportunity to put knowledge into action on a specific problem scenario

The Program:

  • Session 1: Water Reuse 101 and Role of UV Disinfection: What do you need to know to use UV for Reuse?: Erin Mackey, Brown & Caldwell
  • Session 2: Water Reuse Regulations and their impact on the application of UV: Current Water Reuse Regulations and Initiatives in North America. Todd Elliot, Jacobs A Global Perspective on Reuse Water in Food: Tatiana Kouchma, Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada
  • Session 3: UV Disinfection Equipment Options ISO Standard for UV Disinfection for Water Reuse –Kumi Oguma , University of Tokyo (invited) UV Equipment Innovations: Jennifer Osgood/Castine Bernardy, CDM Smith
  • Session 4: Water Reuse Challenges and partnering UV with other water technologies UV, membrane and chemical partnerships: Erin Mackey, Brown & Caldwell
  • Session 5: UV System Operational Challenges - Case Study UV Systems in a Reuse Train – Turning Pilots into Operations: Scott Alpert, Hazen & Sawyer
  • Session 6: Problem set for participants Designing and getting approval for a reuse system that addresses the problem set scenario (20 min)
Work in groups - Problem Sets focuses on: DPR, Indirect PR, or Agriculture/food. (register for one)

Problem Set Tutors include: Phyllis Posy, IUVA Education Committee, PosyGlobal, Israel; Todd Elliott, UV Lead Jacobs, USA; Erin Mackey, National Technical Innovation Leader, Drinking Water and Reuse, Brown & Caldwell, USA; Scott Alpert, Hazen and Sawyer; Roberta Hofman-Caris, KWR, Netherlands; Castine Bernardy, CDMSmith, USA; Tatiana Kouchma, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.

Summary/ Panel Discussion: What do engineers need from the UV industry to advance application of UV in reuse?

4:00 - 6:00 PM

UV Dictionary Development Workshop

IUVA Education Committee Invites you to participate in the:

UV Dictionary Development Workshop

In 2023, IUVA Board of Directors gave a mandate to the IUVA Education Committee to develop a UV dictionary to reduce confusion, promote interoperability and communication across UV applications around the globe. This workshop invites IUVA stakeholders to co-create the process and recommend priorities. We will consider two pathways to develop the UV Dictionary, show what each might look like, and involve participants in development.

Workshop Chair: Phyllis Posy, PosyGlobal, IUVA Education Committee

Kickoff: Discrepancies and Challenges: How can we move forward? Matt Hardwick, Resinnova Laboratories (invited)

Charge: Threading the Needle to Accomplish Our Goals today Erin Mackey, Brown and Caldwell

For the Application Pathway: Wally Kowalski, Dr.Kowalski

For the Technical Pathway: Holger Claus, Ushio America / Tatiani Kouchma, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Examples and Priorities: New Survey information Phyllis Posy, PosyGlobal

Costs and Benefits Analysis: A group session moderated by Todd Elliott, Jacobs

Where we go from here: Ted Mao, IUVA President
