The annual inter club quiz is a popular event hosted each year at Windsor Yacht Club (TWYC) and as usual UTMYC were invited to participate. Unfortunately a number of the ‘winning combination’ of our quizzers of past years were unable to make it for one reason or another, so the stalwarts of the event Bob and Eveline King were joined this year by newbies Peter and Karen Jay plus Ian Esland (unfortunately Deanne had back problems on the day and had to pull out). I would have said there were just the five of us from UTMYC – but we found a few familiar UTMYC faces at the event representing Oxford Ditch led by our worthy Rear Commodore, Andy Wilson.
We were welcomed warmly by our hosts and there was a convivial chat around the bar and the clubhouse before we got down to business. Ten rounds of questions plus a ‘table quiz’ with some fiendish anagrams to solve. The opening round of general knowledge floored us, and we only managed to get four questions right out of ten. We convinced ourselves that this was in line with our planned strategy of not winning the event – as the ‘prize’ is to set the questions for the following year! By the end of the fifth round, this strategy wasn’t working too well, and we were in serious danger of winning – we had luckily used our ‘joker’ on one our better rounds for double points.
At half time, we stopped for food which was jacket potato and chilli plus a few other options which went down well together with some much needed refreshments from the bar. Then it was back to puzzling over the next five rounds and the anagrams. We needed to look out for a few trick questions (‘how many months in the year have 28 days?) and finally it was time for the reckoning.
We won by half a point in front of one of the TWYC teams – they obviously had a subtler strategy of coming an honourable second! This will make it the sixth win for UTMYC since the competition in its current form started back in 2012. So well done everyone – especially our modest star Ian who was a wizard at the anagrams and obscure facts.
