Ballast water treatment by means of UV rays has faced substantial interest in recent years. A growing number of applications for type approval of different UV systems with or without adjacent treatment options however raise questions about the following topics:

Design and Installation of UV Systems

  • What is the UV dose requirement for the treatment of ballast water in light of a large variety of different disinfection target organisms?
  • How can UV system up scaling be handled? What scientific and technical methods can be used in order to accomplish appropriate up scaling? What standards or regulations are available?
  • What are the typical installation requirements in terms of space, energy demand, piping, etc. and what experience with installations have already been made?
  • What technologies are typical used for cleaning? What are the experience with mechanical cleaning, chemical cleaning, etc. onboard of ships?
  • How should combination of UV systems with other technologies be approached in terms of testing and certification?

Sensor, Control and Monitoring Approaches for UV Systems

  • What are the typical control strategies?
  • How is UV dose being verified?

Research and Analysis

  • What is the difference of sea and fresh water treatment for UV systems?
  • What design considerations have to be taken in conjunction with chemical compounds or biological parameters?
  • Are there any analytical whether biological or chemical requirements to be considered with respect to UV treatment?

The following list of speakers will address those questions with a focus from their individual backgrounds. A final podium discussion will enable speakers and the audience identify areas of agreement and disagreement.
