IUVA Elects New Leadership

Washington, DC – An international jury comprise of the members and the Board of Directors for the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) has elected Paul D. Swaim, P.E., as president of the Board of Directors for IUVA. Swaim will serve for two years, and will continue in his current role at CH2M Hill as vice president, senior principal technologist, and CH2M HILL's Global Technology Leader for Water Treatment, responsible for leadership across the spectrum of drinking water treatment processes and services.

Swaim is a recognized international expert in UV disinfection for drinking water, water reuse, and wastewater applications including regulatory issues, pilot testing, predesign, design, construction, startup, and operations. He has served as senior reviewer/technical advisor for more than 30 disinfection projects across North America, including key roles on water treatment UV disinfection projects totaling more than 1 billion gallons per day.  He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, and has more than 20 years of experience in the successful completion of water projects from process selection through startup.  

Additionally, the IUVA has selected two regional hub directors Dr. Andrea Kolch for EMEA and Dr. Bertrand Dussert for the Americas. The regional hub directors are responsible for contributing to the successful leadership and management of the IUVA in their regions.  Specifically, they promote and implement programs with the goal of long term growth for IUVA and the UV industry. 

Dr. Dussert is the founder and president of Dussert Consulting, LLC, a company offering consulting services in the water treatment arena. Dr. Dussert is a water and wastewater treatment expert with over twenty years of experience. He has extensive expertise in water treatment technologies including ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). He is first-named inventor or co-inventor of five patents and is the author of over 50 technical papers. He is the past president of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA), and has served on the Board of Directors since 2001. Dr. Dussert is also an Adjunct Professor of wastewater treatment & engineering for the graduate program in the Department of Earth & Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Bertrand Dussert has a M.S. in Chemistry from Université Claude Bernard, Lyon 1 (France), and completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the Institute National des Sciences Appliquees de Toulouse (France).

Dr. Kolch has worked in various senior positions in the water treatment sector for many years. Before he founded Hytecon, where he is a partner and managing director, he was responsible for Research and Development for Wedeco GmbH; and was head of development, senior vice president and board member of ITT Wedeco. In this position he was responsible for a variety of Ozone and UV treatment product launches. In addition he represented the company for all technical aspects within the investment relation arena and led numerous technical due diligence and M&A projects. Furthermore he was responsible for the company’s patent portfolio strategy. During his tenure as a board member the company’s patents tripled. Also, the company sold the largest systems worldwide for Waste and Drinking Water.  Dr. Kolch holds a M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Bonn in Microbiology.

IUVA’s mission is to provide a forum for the discussion of all scientific and technological issues that relate to the use of ultraviolet light; To provide a common voice for the interests of companies using ultraviolet technologies and manufacturing ultraviolet lamps or equipment; To organize periodic international and national conferences focused on ultraviolet technologies; To publish a regular Newsletter (IUVA News) to keep members informed of new developments in the applications of ultraviolet technology; To encourage the establishment of rational terms, units and nomenclature in the fields of ultraviolet technology; To encourage research into the advancement of the applications of ultraviolet technologies; To encourage the adoption of rational environmental regulations that would encourage the use of ultraviolet technologies.
